UNSEEN : TIRANA 2025
This special one-off performance devised in partnership with
CCIF Malta and initiated by visionary Alec Douglas Bvumburah (Chairman/Founder) uses a range of interactive and immersive theatre techniques, multimedia and physical theatre to explore the visibility and impact of marginalised, invisible presences in modern cities. While well-intentioned and partly-effective systems exist at international, national and local level to prevent and mitigate human trafficking, youth slavery and exploitation, one of the biggest challenges to progress is the ability of individuals and communities to ignore and “unsee” the victims despite being in close proximity and often regular contact within every major city in the world.
The performance explores how this invisibility is sometimes chosen and imposed by both the subject and the community, individually and collectively, for a range of reasons. Fear of consequences, shame, “otherness/othering” along with economic and demographic factors. Yet even when the barriers of visibility are removed, intentionally or otherwise, challenges remain. It is a road that we must travel as individuals, not as institutions. Beyond advocacy, activism, and public service, the journey begins with opening our eyes to the truth in front of us.
The mission of Darkplay Theatre includes the development and sharing of Hellenic culture and traditions to a wider audience, and this performance also references ancient Greek mythology and history, which contains narratives and archetypes which are still directly relevant and meaningful.
SECRET SPACES / I AM THE LABYRINTH : THE PERFORMANCES
These performances explore the myths and archetypes of Minoan Crete and their roots in the earliest Bronze Age sacred histories. They are highly interactive, physical, sensory and rich in multimedia elements. Darkplay Theatre bring complex and timeless stories to non-traditional audiences and incorporating innovative, pluralist casting, modern music and cultural awareness.
Each show delivers profound, shocking and memorable experiences for viewers. The audience become part of the performance (literally, visually and physically) and are conscious participants with an important and active contribution.

Darkplay Theatre is a legally constituted Social Cooperative Enterprise (KOINSEP) and artistic organization with a mission to bring Greek culture with respect, creativity and imagination to new and non-traditional audiences through innovative performing arts, theatre and multimedia, encouraging, representing and recruiting performers and contributors from all communities.

Following a strict non-profit model, all funds raised from ticket sales, donations, funding and other revenue streams are committed 100% to current and future production costs (and associated admin/overheads). No profits, surpluses or investments are shared, returned and distributed, no funders/investors receive payments of any kind (including gifts or gifts in kind), and the voluntary management board receive no salaries for their board roles.
We are also participating members of the Anna Lindh Foundation Greek Network which works to bring together people and organizations from the two sides of the Mediterranean, focusing on development through education and training.
We are partners with CCIF Malta whose vision is to engage and equip Maltese communities to actively work together to free Malta of slavery and human trafficking, and to see all local and ethnic communities in Malta operate alongside each other with harmony and transparency; free of slavery and economic exploitation.

The mission is to present important and complex stories in a way that is profoundly artistic, exciting and innovative. Improvisational, interactive and visually engaging performances take us on a personal and collective journey, and transforms the audience into empowered, inspired participants who shape and share the culture they live in, rather than simply receiving passively as atomised consumers.
We encourage connections with non-traditional theatre audiences through the internationalist, multimedia framework of the project, as a way of bringing people back to the essential experience of theatre as storytelling, sensation, ritual and transformation.
We are also dedicated to the cultural exchange of ideas, to creating a community of artists and creators, and to offering opportunities for new ideas and creative movements.

CODA : WHY GREEK THEATRE IS SO IMPORTANT
Greek theatre represents the world's starting point for the dramatic arts, for the writing, performance and staging of stories for a diverse audience, for the democratisation of both the creation and the enjoyment of the arts, for the independence and separation of art from official religions or state power.
It gives us the evolving exchange of cultures, craft and creativity, the core elements of dramaturgy, and the individual and the collective voice as vessels of communication.
The creators respect and treasure this amazing tradition - the writers, philosophers and poets whose names have passed down the centuries, and the stories and themes which are as relevant today as they have ever been.
This project explicitly aims to preserve, celebrate and continue the fundamental essence of Hellenic theatre with an internationalist perspective, while bringing new ideas, technologies and interpretations to storytelling and communication. Greece must remain a vital and vibrant centre of theatrical life, and this project will strengthen the relationships between creators, partner organisations, supporters of the arts and audiences through innovation, experimentation, meaningful and memorable experiences.
